The account holder of the 1800 number is charged for every call depending on its origin. Call charges vary between plans and the rate is quoted on per minute basis. However, they are charged on a per second basis with no minimums i.e. a 10 second call is charged for 10 seconds.
Calls to a 1800 number are free from any Australian phone line including mobiles.
The 1800 number account holder is charged for every incoming call. Call rates depend upon the plan, call origin and where the number is being routed to i.e. landline or mobile.
A business that receives around 20 calls per day is likely to spend an average of $20 per week. In most cases, just one additional sale will more than cover the cost of the number. And that’s before you take into account all the other benefits like boosting business presence, getting better results from marketing activities and making the business more efficient through an improved call handling process.

An 1800 number can only be used for receiving calls and you can’t make calls out from the number like you can from a landline or a mobile number. That’s why they’re called inbound numbers i.e. for inbound calls only.
There are two ways of getting a number. You either get issued a Free Pool Number at the time of connection or you can buy the number through ACMA Smart Numbers. As the name suggests, there is no upfront cost for Free Pool numbers, they are issued for free. However, if you elect to get a Smart Number, there is a minimum upfront cost of $250 plus and administration fee. The upfront cost depends on how memorable the number is and/or its word value. The more memorable the number is, the more expensive it becomes.
No. Business 1300 doesn’t lease inbound numbers and we encourage our customers to purchase them through the ACMA. The reason is that we believe you should own the ROU (Rights of Use) to the number and 100% control over it. In most cases it’s also a lot cheaper to buy the number rather than lease.
If the number was connected from the Free Pool range, it automatically goes into ACMA quarantine and cannot be reconnected. In other words, you lose the number. If it’s a Smart Number, then the ROU holder keeps the number and can reconnect it in the future. Please note that a Smart Number needs to be connected to a network at least once in a three-year period. Please check ACMA smart numbers terms and conditions for full details.
In most cases the foreign country carrier will not allow calls to an Australian inbound number. However, there are exceptions and the overseas carrier will most likely charge the caller for the call. In addition, the Australian account holder of the inbound number will be charged the applicable international call rate. We advise our customers not to promote their inbound number to overseas callers.
Business 1300 requires an ABN to connect a service. However, if you choose to buy a Smart Number, there is no requirement for an ABN and you can do so in a private name.
There are several ways to do that. Firstly, you can utilise the Geo-Routing Feature to divert calls to specific locations depending on where the call is being made from. You can also utilise the Auto Attendant function to allow callers to select the required location through the IVR prompts. And then there is the Post Code Routing function (additional charges apply) where the caller is prompted for a post code to connect them to the local branch.
The Call Whisper feature is the most effective way of being alerted the call is being routed from the 1800 number. While the call is being connected, a subtle voiceover (not heard by the caller) announces the call is coming from the inbound number.
